JY CALLIGRAPHY

The River-stroke by JY

Like the tributaries coursing through rolling hills and valleys, JY’s calligraphy art is an undulating and elevated articulation of tradition, poetry, syntax, meter and emotions. With each stroke of his brush, akin to tributaries flowing into a confluence of thoughts, a river of expressions.
The River stroke is a homage to his grandfather’s traditions - sojourns into memory; joy, love, anguish, and desire. When at first seen as unconventional and a brackish riposte to the traditions, JY’s art is very much steeped in the craft and deftness of traditional Chinese calligraphy.
Beyond that, his art sees a world no longer delineated by rules, but only of a single-minded expression of thought, infused with layers of contemplation and purpose, expressed in the movement of his unceasing River-stroke.

“FROM THEART 由心出發”Solo Exhibition & Book Launch - 3rd to 30th of October at Tsutaya Books KL

JY Calligraphy takes over the Art Gallery at Tsutaya Books as the Featured Artist of the Month with an exhibition titled “FROM THEART 由心出發”. As one of the most sought-after bookstores in Kuala Lumpur, the partnership is undoubtedly an exciting one, as this marks JY’s first solo exhibition.

A homegrown creative who champions the art of Chinese calligraphy through his innovative and contemporary lens, Jameson (also known as JY) is no stranger to the art scene as his work transcends language, culture and religion. Dubbed the River Stroke (‘Liu Su’ in Mandarin), his pieces don’t only portray the traditional stylised writing in a different light – he also aims to express the style, influences and characteristics of his late grandfather, a Malaysian who grew up in Nanyang, China.

Held at Tsutaya Books in Pavilion Bukit Jalil, the exhibition will take over the Art Gallery corner. The area will feature a curated selection of JY’s artwork that pays homage to memory, joy, love, anguish, and desire. Some of the highlights include 花若盛開,蝴蝶自來 (“butterflies will come when flowers are in efflorescence” in English), 路遥知马力,日久见人心 (“Distance tests a horse's strength, time reveals a person's character” in English) 感恩 (“gratitude” in English) and more.

In conjunction with the exhibition, JY will also be launching his book titled ‘The River-Stroke’. A collection of some of his best works, the book will be available for sale in-store, and on the 8th and 29th of October, a book signing and a meet-and-greet session will also be held. Drop by for a live calligraphy segment to see the artist in action.

The JY Calligraphy exhibition will be held from the 3rd to 30th of October at Tsutaya Books. Find it at Lot 2.89.00, Level 2 Orange Zone, Pavilion Bukit Jalil and is open from 10am to 10pm daily.
